Sunday Spotlight: Paul Begemann

This week we check in with a 5:30pm regular, Paul Begemann β€” A little about yourself: I grew up in St. Louis loving everything STL sports, I'm a proud Marquette Alumni who has been living in Milwaukee every since. Katy and I recently bought a house in Tosa and we are getting married on June 22! Yay. Working in sales some days are better than others so channeling that frustration healthy has led to me working out! It started as cardio and I actually ran the Lakefront Marathon in just over four hours. I finished that race vowing to run it under four and I haven't run longer than a 5k since. πŸ™‚ β€” How did you get into CrossFit? As mentioned above I come from a cardio background. Running and Rowing. I would rather run 10 miles then do a strength set so when I joined Bootcamp (Shout out to Ross) it was just what I had been avoiding which made it the perfect workout. I had never done a snatch, clean, squat etc. I had done some presses at a hotel gym once and it confirmed why I avoided it. My mobility is slowly getting better and every day I am gaining strength and practice. β€” How has CrossFit changed you outside the gym? Confidence to tackle anything – I still struggle with a TON of the movements but working on them and listening to coaches helps in real world situations. Crossfit has taught me patience, persistence, and of course what a clean and jerk is (I think). β€” What makes Badger CrossFit unique? I'll echo what everybody else says: its the community. Everyone has a shared interest in bettering themselves so it is an automatic connection. I have met awesome people at badger who push me and hopefully I push them (on the rower). Showing up either at 5:30pm or 6 am I know I will see friendly familiar faces. β€” Advice for people just getting started: Just do it! There's plenty of reasons we make up why we β€œcan’t” but all those for me were just me being scared. When I took the plunge it was and is an amazing experience and I am so happy I did. Talk to people and make friends – get to know the coaches. And lastly of course don't be too intimidated by ROSS hulking out shirtless. He's just a man no matter what he says.
