This week we check in with a 9:15a/12p regular, Mike Branski! — CrossFitting since: June 2015 overall, and January 2016 at Badger (dang! 3 years at BCF). — A little about yourself: I'm the full grown(-ish) man with the Pokemon phone case and Star Wars wrist wraps who hangs around the 9:15 and noon classes. I am swept off my feet by my wonderful wife every day; love our dog, cat and rabbit (and probably your pets, too); and enjoy woodworking, games, cooking, and practicing mindfulness and stoicism. I aim to be ridiculously positive about life at all times, no matter the circumstance. — How did you get into CrossFit? Having the extremely physical career of a software developer, I mostly wanted to get into a less round shape. It always came up on paleo recipe blogs (I know, I can hear how hipster that sounds) and figured I'd try it out. Turns out it's the first form of exercise I not only do not dread, but actually look forward to doing. — How has CrossFit changed you outside the gym? I joined to get in shape, but stayed to get healthy. It has taught me so much about what it means to be healthy, both physically AND mentally. It helped bring awareness to areas of life – nutrition, movement, sleep – I used to merely coast through. Because of CrossFit, I learned just how important it is to have measurable goals for anything I want to meaningfully progress in. It has given me a sense of balance. — What makes Badger CrossFit unique? People often say the community or the programming – and they're not wrong! – but for me it all comes back to the staff. Tyler, Amy and Tina made me feel like family from day one, plus you have Joe "How Does He Always Look So Good" Paul, John "What Happened to His Shirt" Heim, and Jarrod "Let's Start Barbell Warm-up With Bicep Curls" Pelkofer, and all the rest. These people make it possible for us to have a strong community, excellent programming, and the foundation for kick ass results. — Advice for people just getting started: Don't let the intimidation of being new stop you from coming in. Seriously.
