This week we check in with one of our Function rockstars, Kris Pfeiffer! — Functioning since: December 2016 — A little about yourself: I'm married to Pam Pfeiffer, who's been a Badger member for 5 years. We have two kids, Sara (12) and Jake (14). I work at Northwestern Mutual downtown, within their analytics organization. We live in Merton, which is where I grew up as a non-athletic, band geek kid. After college I figured I'd better do something to stay in shape, and after a while I fell into competitive swimming on a masters swim team. After the kids, however, swimming became difficult to fit into the schedule, so I fell back into doing very little to stay in shape. I did somehow find time to get into home brewing. I also amassed a huge drum kit and guitar collection, which I try to play daily. — How did you get into Function MKE? My first Function class was really the fact-finding stage of what was to be an intervention for Pam. It was about 4 years after she got into Crossfit and I needed to figure out what sort of cult she was wrapped up with. At first it was the secret language she used. I'd see text messages on her phone with weird, cryptic terms like AMRAP, RX, PR…and just who the hell is this Wod guy and what is she doing at the box with him? I went, then, under the guise of getting into better shape. It seemed that I was "throwing out" my back more often than ever. The desk job and not doing much athletically were starting to take a toll on my back. The key to staving off back pain is indeed core strength, and from what Pam told me, Function could deliver that. — How has Function changed you outside the gym? I'm in best physical shape I've ever been in right now. All the medical "numbers" are where they're supposed to be, I feel great, and my back is much, much stronger than before. It's stronger because the rest of me is stronger, too. Sometimes you'll see me take it easy with some movements and there are some that I just shouldn't do because of my back (I'm looking at you, wall balls), but I haven't had a back pain episode since joining Function. It's also made me appreciate just how awesome Pam is at CrossFit.
