This week we check in with a 5am member Drew Porterfield! — CrossFitting since: December 2016. — A little about yourself: Grew up in Mukwonago, currently live in Milwaukee near Miller Park. I have 2 dogs- Jacob a 10.5yr old malamute mix and Nina a 11.5yr old lab mix that keep me active all year round. Love country music and enjoy going to concerts with my older sister. I’m a veterinary assistant at an emergency and speciality clinic in Glendale and am certified as a rehabilitation assistant, rehabbing post-op knee surgeries, spinal surgeries, and overall arthritic/elderly dogs – and a few cats. I enjoy running, putting in about 25 miles a week and most of those miles I take my 4-legged running partner, Jacob, with me. I have also finished a few Tough Mudders- I even got my dad to join me at the age of 63! — How did you get into CrossFit? A co-worker talked about her CrossFit WODs. I had already been cross training at home but I got bored with the same workout every day and finally gave it a try. — How has CrossFit changed you outside the gym? I’ve always been active and played soccer through college but I started long distance running about 5 or 6 years ago with my first half marathon in August 2014. Since starting CrossFit my running times have greatly improved. I’ve ran several half marathons and have taken almost 12 minutes off my time- PR 9/2018 1:40:49. I have also ran 4 marathons and my times have improved by 23 minutes, as well as qualifying for the Boston Marathon twice but have never made the cut off time- PR 5/2018 3:31:26! — What makes Badger CrossFit unique? The environment and people! I’m a very shy person and it took me awhile to meet other members but everyone is so welcoming. — Advice for people just getting started: It can be intimidating and can make you feel uncomfortable to start but take that first step into the unknown world of WODs and you’ll get results. Also, listen to and follow the Coach’s instructions- it will get you to your first strict pull up, kipping pull up, PR on lifts, etc.. “The task ahead of you is never greater than the strength within you”. @ddums20
