Here’s the problem I have with “diet challenges:”

They don’t work. Yes, I’ve done them in my gym before and no I’m not the pot calling the kettle black here. I’ve learned my lesson. Like my quote yesterday – a mistake repeated is a decision. I’ve made the decision to change course.

They worked at the time, people got results, people got benefits from it. But guess what? Nothing changed. Long term, people went back to their old ways and wanted “another challenge” 6 months after. What happened here?

You cannot change anyone who doesn’t want to change. You can coach a person, lead, educate, support, scream at, call bull on, walk away from or a dozen other sometimes questionable behaviors, but no one ever changes until he reaches the point where he says, “This behavior isn’t working for me. There has to be a better way.” People seeking change need all the support and coaching you can give them.

It’s the human condition. We need quick fixes, easy ways out and simple ‘programs’ to boot us into gear. The problem with this is that nothing sticks and nothing remains. We develop good habits for the challenge, but never engrain them into our day or our lifestyle. We have people that surround us that are bad influences or are not along for the ride. The change hasn’t occurred and the behavior remains the same.

For me and my gym, our culture of diet at Badger CrossFit is going to change. I’m sick of it being “something you should do.” Not anymore. No more challenges, but rather, a shift in mentality about what diet is, what is means, how to do it, what to do, and having people in here that actually give a crap about what they put into their bodies. Food will give the greatest change to people’s lives, even more than my barbells.

We are all walking advertisements for ourselves, whether you like it or not. And I want all of us to be our best versions of this advertisement. Get ready!
