Today, we did a workout in honor of Meghan P’s friend. I will let her letter explain:On a cruise over Spring Break, Rachel’s Senior year. (she is second from the left in the purple)
I met Rachel in college at Ball State University my freshman year; she was an outgoing, athletic sophomore with a wonderful sense of humor. Although we became sorority sisters by chance, I knew immediately that we would form a strong friendship way beyond that label. I admired her for all of the qualities I didn’t have; her spontaneity, carefree spirit, and confidence in herself. With the positive attitude she displayed day in and day out, one would have never guessed that she was sick. We were all shocked to learn of her diagnosis with cancer in her Junior year. But she refused to talk about it, or let anyone treat her any differently. She just wanted to enjoy her college experience like any other 21 year old, and that’s what her friends were there for. We continued from where we left off before she was diagnosed, and made it a memorable last year of college for all of us.
Rachel then graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Administration and went on to work in the sports industry in Indianapolis. Although I moved back home to Milwaukee, we were all able to reunite at various weddings, homecomings and other events. She seemed so happy, and started to look better and better each time I saw her; we all thought she had beat the illness. It was a surprise to all when her family announced that she had finally lost her battle with cancer on the evening of Saturday, September 22nd. At age 25, she was taken from the world much too soon. Heaven certainly gained a beautiful angel, and I will forever remember Rachel for her strength and bravery in overcoming adversity.
